CHAPTER TEN
SURI
Once again, I wished for a hat of some kind to cover my face.
This was humiliating.
My parents were going to be horrified when they saw the news on the vids tonightâand probably every waking moment for the next three days, if I were being honest with myself.
Khanavai in Bangalore would be big news.
I tried to tell myself that it didn't matter, that I was an adult. And besides, I had an excellent reason for coming home with two Khanavai males in tow.
But what I told myself didn't really matter.
Because no matter how much the world changed or how independent women became in our society, family was still important.
I cared what my parents thought of me.
That was why I had involved them in my decision to go to Station 21 in the first place.
They hadn't approvedânot exactly, anyway. But I knew how they thought, and I could see it in their faces when we discussed it.
They were thinking that I would take the time away from home to learn about other cultures, just as I had when I'd gone to university in England, but that I would eventually come homeâonce again, just as I had after uni. And that once I returned, I would be more willing to let them help me find a nice Indian boy to settle down with.
Honestly, that was kind of what I thought too. I believed that I wasn't doing anything but postponing the inevitable, ensuring that I had a little more time, a little more freedom before I accepted what my life was destined to become.
I had a good career. I had friends. I even dated occasionally. But eventually, I assumed, I would want to get married and have a family. And in my mind that had always been something that would happen in Bangalore. Probablyâagain, if I were honest with myselfâwith a nice Indian boy my parents introduced me to.
But now?
Here I was, headed to my parents' house with a Khanavai male who had taken one sniff of me and growled the word, âMine.â
And somehow, I was supposed to pretend that in a matter of only a few hours, I had become so utterly enamored of him that I was willing to bring him home to meet my parents.
This scheme was going to fall apart.
I just knew it.
